The Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis

The Northern lights - Aurora Borealis

The Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis, occur in the Arctic sky on clear, dark nights. The lights are caused by solar winds interacting with the earth's magnetic field. Statistically, the northern lights in Lapland are most likely to be seen from mid-August to mid-April. Every year, the Northern lights are a common sight at Pyhä-Luosto and the past few years have been excellent for observing the northern lights. Seeing the northern lights is believed to bring good luck!

The Northern lights activities

You can observe the northern lights on your own or with a local guide. For example, the guided northern lights tours on snowshoes, cross county skis and snowmobiles. If you want to photograph the northern lights, you can book a photography tour where the right camera settings are checked with the guide. When interested in booking the guided tours, we recommend you to contact service providers in advance.

What if the sky is cloudy or it is the season for midnight sun? Visitor Centre Naava in Pyhätunturi hosts a 12-minute nonstop Northern Lights Show which you are welcome to enjoy any day of the year. You will learn about Aurora Borealis and might even recognize some places of the neighborhood as all the material has been filmed in this area. The 360-degree show is part of Visitor Centre Naava’s free nature exhibition.

For groups, it is possible to book the virtual Northern lights show (incl. video and photos) which is held in Aurora House (the Northern lights teepee) approximately 45 min drive away from Luosto. The person behind the program is an active researcher of the Northern Lights at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, Dr. Esa Turunen. If you want to meet Esa and hear his stories and tips about the Northern lights, read more about the Northern lights show here.
