The capping of Huttu-ukko

We begin the Pyhäs May Day by gathering at the statue of Huttu-Ukko and "capping" it. Huttu-Ukko is a guardian spirit in the form of a gigantic man, who is said to watch over and protect the area. Therefore, a statue has been erected in his honor, and it is traditionally capped as part of the May Day festivities.
