Cycling and Mountain Biking

Mountain biking in Pyhä-Luosto area, Lapland

Mountain biking is allowed during the snow-free season on most of the marked trails in Pyhä-Luosto National Park.

There are also biking routes outside the Pyhä-Luosto national park: in Pyhä at Soutaja and Vuostimo, and in Luosto at Orresokka and Kantapäävaara. Cycling is prohibited along 10 kilometers of trails in Isokuru gorge, and in the southern section of the Noitatunturi Trail.

During the snow-free season, Pyhä-Luosto National Park offers nearly 100 kilometers of marked mountain biking trails. Including the surrounding tourism areas outside the park, there are approximately 190 kilometers of marked routes available for mountain biking and bikepacking. Below, you can explore the routes in more detail through Youtube-videos and Outdooractive route maps.

The area also features companies that organize mountain biking tours, winter biking trips, and bike rentals. These providers are listed at the bottom of the page. Welcome Cyclist service providers include Pyhähippu, Kultakero Rental, Pyhä Safaris, Neidon Sydän, Pyhä Igloos, and Lucky Ranch.

In summer 2024, a new downhill biking route Pyhä Flow was opened in Pyhä. It is suitable both for beginners and experienced downhill enthusiasts. Younger riders can try the sport on the Pyhä Mini Flow route, which starts at the magic carpet lift on Pyhä's front slopes.

For those interested in bikepacking and long-distance gravel cycling in Lapland, Pyhä and Luosto offer not only services but also scenic views that provide a taste of the fells. The Pyhä-Luosto National Park MTB Loop is a versatile 2–3 day gravel cycling route ideal for bikepacking.

During the snow-covered season, winter biking is allowed except on groomed ski trails and in restricted zones.
An exception is the wilderness trail around Pyhätunturi, which opens to winter biking from week 8 onwards. Maintenance information for winter biking trails can be found in the ski trail tracking system.

Cyclists who follow mountain biking etiquette and respect other trail users are warmly welcomed to enjoy the natural surroundings. Trails are shared, and nature belongs to everyone.

Outdoor Etiquette for biking

Plan your route carefully, especially when going on an overnight biking trip. Consider these when planning the route:

  • Choose a trail that is meant for mountain biking. It can be either a trail designated specifically for biking, or a shared-use trail. Be considerate to other trail users!
  • When biking in winter time, keep away from cross-country skiing tracks.
  • If you ride a bike at dark, make sure your bike is lit. Although there is plenty of sunlight in summer, it can get dark in the forests after the sun goes down. Trails are hardly ever lit.
  • Take advantage of the maintained campfire and picnic sites for breaks on your biking trip. For overnight stays, use huts, lean-to shelters and designated camping sites.
